Saltwater Fly Fishing South Pacific – Aitutaki, Fanning & CXI
Saltwater Fly Fishing for Bones and Giant Trevally in the South Pacific
Scattered across the heart of the Pacific, islands like Aitutaki, Fanning, and Christmas (Kiritimati) have earned a reputation for producing some of the world’s most exciting flats fly fishing. These remote coral atolls deliver pure sight-fishing in shallow, gin-clear water — often with Bonefish tailing just meters from shore, and Giant Trevally patrolling the reef edges.
Aitutaki in the Cook Islands remains a benchmark for trophy Bonefish, with shots at cruising GTs and Bluefin Trevally adding an adrenaline edge. To the north, Christmas Island (CXI) continues to attract dedicated saltwater fly anglers for its vast lagoon system, prolific Bonefish schools, and endless wadeable flats.
Even farther afield, Fanning Island, 45 minutes flight from CXI, offers one of the last truly untouched bonefishing experiences on earth — a remote atoll where numbers meet size, and where fly anglers can still discover their own flat each morning.
We’ll be adding lodge and guide reviews from across the region as we explore more of these remarkable fisheries.
