Saltwater Fly Fishing South Pacific – Aitutaki, Fanning & CXI

Saltwater Fly Fishing for Bones and Giant Trevally in the South Pacific

Scattered across the heart of the Pacific, island atolls like Aitutaki, Fanning, and Christmas (Kiritimati) have earned a reputation for producing some of the world’s most exciting flats fly fishing. These remote coral atolls deliver pure sight-fishing in shallow, often gin-clear water — where you can find bonefish tailing just meters from shore, and giant trevally patrolling reef edges on the rising tide.

Aitutaki in the Cook Islands remains a benchmark for trophy Bonefish, with shots at cruising GTs and Bluefin Trevally adding an adrenaline edge. The South Pacific Ocean will unveil new destinations over the coming decade; some we are exploring quietly right now.

To the north, Christmas Island (CXI) continues to attract dedicated saltwater fly anglers for its vast lagoon system, prolific Bonefish schools, and endless wadeable flats.

Even farther afield, Fanning Island, only an hour 15 minutes from CXI, and just over the equator into the Northern Hemisphere, offers one of the last truly untouched bonefishing experiences on earth. This remote atoll is where fish numbers meet size, and where fly anglers can still discover their own flat each morning on this 42 square mile atoll.
