There's a new place to base yourself when chasing permit in paradise: Xcalak Paradise Fly Fishing Lodge. And it's turning anglers' heads.
Xcalak Paradise Lodge makes a strong impression as you drive past the sports park and towards the beachfront after arriving in the sleepy fishing village of Xcalak on Mexico's southern Caribbean coast, just north of the Belizean border.
Architecturally designed in keeping with the minimalist Yucatán style, its golden walls conceal four spacious twin-share bedrooms, each with a private ensuite and modern air conditioning. The thoughtfully designed compound centers around a generous dining pavilion, an open bar that somehow always seems to be in business, a striking swimming pool and inviting communal spaces where anglers gather to relive the day's successes.

Barman extraordinaire Junior may well be the finest Mexican mixologist south of Tulum. In truth, every member of the team makes guests feel genuinely welcome, and the hospitality is every bit as memorable as the fishing.
The kitchen produces beautifully presented Mayan-inspired dishes showcasing fresh local ingredients and regional flavours. Breakfasts prepare you for long days on the flats, lunches are enjoyed aboard the skiffs, and each evening's dinner is an event in itself —one of those rare lodge experiences where the meal becomes almost as anticipated as the fishing.
Of course, comfortable accommodation is only part of the story.

The Mexican Caribbean's Premier Saltwater Fly Fishing
Xcalak has quietly built a reputation as one of the Caribbean's premier saltwater fly fishing destinations. The expansive turtle-grass flats of Chetumal Bay, protected reef lagoons and winding channels offer outstanding sight fishing for permit, bonefish and resident tarpon, while snook, barracuda and jack crevalle provide plenty of variety when conditions suit.
Unlike many better-known fisheries, Xcalak still feels wonderfully uncrowded. On many days you'll share the water with only a handful of other skiffs, allowing guides to work the tides and light rather than compete for productive water, like you may find further north.
For anglers planning a visit during late spring/early summer, the timing becomes even more attractive. May/June sees the arrival of migratory tarpon moving along the Caribbean coastline, creating the exciting possibility of combining technical permit fishing with opportunities to cast to larger silver kings during the same trip.
It's little wonder that more traveling fly fishers are discovering what locals have known for years — that Xcalak remains one of the Mexican Caribbean's last genuinely wild flats fisheries.
Bookings and Hosted Weeks
For destination anglers, specialist fly fishing travel operator Isolation Outfitters has announced a partnership with Xcalak Paradise Fly Fishing Lodge, offering both year-round fishing packages and fully hosted weeks during the peak May permit and migratory tarpon season. The partnership gives anglers a seamless way to experience the fishery, with expert pre-trip planning, hosted support and all logistics coordinated from arrival in Cancún or Tulum through to departure.
If Xcalak has been on your permit bucket list, there has never been a better time to experience it.
